Series Overview: House of Night by P.C Cast & Kristin Cast

What started off as a causal read turned into a marathon of determination as I went from half hardly picking up Marked (Book #1 of HoN), reading through Betrayed (Book #2 of HoN), moving on to Chosen (Book #3 of HoN), consuming Untamed (Book #4 of HoN) and continuing on to obsessively devour the entire House of Night series to date in the month of February.

I can't believe I read 11 books in one month. I've been completely taken in by this series and I think I'm going to need to ration the 4 novellas to get me though to October when the 12th and final book is due to be released.

The series follows Zoe, a newly 'marked' fledgeling in a world where everyone knows vampirism is a trait that develops at a certain age in adolescence. Vampires are not so much blood thirsty killers with fangs but more so supper natural beings with close connections to magic and the other world. Their matriarchal society is also founded around overtly Wiccan traditions with circle casting and elemental spells featuring heavily throughout Zoe's new life. To Zoe, this new beginning holds opportunities of self discovery and adventure, in contrast to the suffocating human life she leaves behind. However, Zoe soon learns that "Darkness does not always equate to evil, just as light does not always mean good."

I can't say much about the plot without giving things away but its worth noting that even thought the series is going to end on 12 books, I don't feel as thought its been run into the ground. Each book has been exciting and funny with a bit of contemporary popular culture thrown in here and there to ensure it doesn't take itself too seriously. In all honesty, I thought I was done with the concept of a vampire high school after Vampire Academy, but I stand corrected. This is a very different approach to the usual teenage vampire love triangle/ fighting evil series and its been a really enjoyable read.
